For more than 2000 years reference to diabetes appears in the earliest Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) texts, including the first medical text in Chinese history, Huang Di Nei Jing (The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic). Acupuncture, moxibustion, and Chinese herbs have been traditionally used in the treatment of diabetes to reduce blood glucose levels and normalize endocrine function. Clinical studies have demonstrated that TCM has a beneficial effect on lowering serum glucose levels and reducing insulin resistance. It is also used extensively for treating neuropathy, stroke rehabilitation, and prevention of brain ischemia, and other diabetes complications. An integrative approach is recommended for diabetes patients.
